Getting the Ball Rolling

Most scholars are up and running and getting used to the pace and expectations to middle school level work. They are learning how to monitor themselves, use their planners, and tonight some of them are finishing their math work using our new virtual text.

If you are having trouble signing on, please be sure you are typing in your user and password IDENTICALLY as it is on your paper slip. They are case sensitive and need to be exact.

If you still have paperwork to hand in, please send it in tomorrow. Also I am collecting the $5 per child for their membership to the National Junior Forensic League. That membership will carry them for the next three years. Thank you for your donations.

Tomorrow is our last Friday in the month of August and we will celebrate the August birthdays at 11:15 in our classroom.

Monday is Labor Day and we will not be in school. We will pick up Tuesday morning after a refreshing break!
Enjoy the weekend!

Chill Doctor Pepper, Just CHILL!

Today in the suite scholars started out using their thesaurus' to find synonyms for our vocabulary words for the week. Tomorrow we will be using them in sentences to prepare for the test on Friday. We also dug into the first act and scene of Julius Caesar and the scholars had the opportunity to act out that portion of the play.

For math we continued with our number lines and the scholars mastered certain basics that had to do with intervals and measuring.
We then moved onto our deserts unit in history and learned about songlines, an aborigine mapping system that was based on land marks. Later on in the unit scholars will have the opportunity to write songlines about our building and how to negotiate through it.

After lunch we moved right into our science experiment. Your scholars should be able to discuss procedure and what we were trying to find out, as well as whether or not their hypothesis was correct. (see photos).

Please note that I would like to sign up our scholars for their National Junior Forensic membership by the end of next week. If possible please send in $5 for your scholar which covers his or her membership for the next three years. Thank you for your help in this.

Also please remember to send in paperwork that needs to be signed by both parents and scholars.

Off to a Great Start! Primus Inter Pares!

We are off and running in the suite! We have pretty much finished up our procedures and now we can start getting into the meat of the work! We started today with our vocab and spelling list for the week, as well as discussing assassination and the definitions of it. We will dig into Shakespeare tomorrow and get to the "heart" of the matter.

We also went over procedures for math and started discovering the large deserts of the world for history. We studied parts of the scientific method for science and began the background work for Lois Lowry's Number the Stars in Literature.

Our young men are doing a fine job with the new 6th grade responsibility this year of getting all the recess equipment out in the morning and in for the afternoon. I am proud of how they are taking on responsibility.

See you all tomorrow evening for BACK TO SCHOOL night! :)
