Hello Families.
I am sorry I needed to leave town in a hurry. My mother-in-love is in hospice and will be earning her wings soon. I appreciate your patience as I am gone and there are varying subs in the classroom. I will return as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Mrs. Goers

More Celebrations, Birthdays and Hanukkah!
Happy Birthday Tyler! |
Happy Birthday Zachary! |
Hanukkah, a Jewish celebration that we studied in history earlier this year, began the Wednesday before Thanksgiving this year. We have the final three days to celebrate in the suite. We enjoyed lighting the candles, learning a bit of Hebrew, and playing Dreidel! Gabby, being the youngest in the class, earns the honor of lighting the menorah each day.

Fundraising and Ratio Building!
The scholars have been busy this past week! We got the ball rolling on the fundraiser and have collected for the first two weeks! We had over $400 the first week and over $500 this week! Great job SCHOLARS!!!!
We also finished up our chapter on ratios and instrumentally put it to practice in the cafe by creating no bake cookies from recipes that had to be scaled up or down accordingly. The scholars did a great job figuring the math and making the cookies. There were five different cookies created, bacon/chocolate, strawberry/white chocolate, pecan, chocolate chip, and gingerbread. Everyone got the chance to sample each of the five cookies and we had enough to share with Mr. Keddington's class and the administration.
This coming week Mrs. Cardinal will be in on Monday and Tuesday to sub for me while I run a half marathon in Las Vegas. I will be driving back Tuesday and hopefully make it to school in time for the Town Hall Meeting at 6:30. I hope to see you there if you have an opinion about the 7th and 8th grade addition.
Have a great weekend!

Birthdays and Blessings!
In a whirlwind sort of day the scholars finished their oratories, had a heated debate about electronics in schooling, and celebrated birthdays for the month. Then it was on to music, the book fair and lunch!
Next week will have us all busy goal setting, writing, and getting into the new quarter. The sixth grade is again sponsoring a school wide service project in November. We need plastic containers from peanut butter or mayonnaise jars to decorate and get to every class in the school. We need 22 and we currently have 7. Please send in any containers you have with your scholars! If you are crafty and would like to come in and help us decorate and get them ready, we will be working on them next Tuesday and Thursday during character time. Ask your scholar what this project is about! They should be able to fill you in!
If you are coming for conferences on Monday and Tuesday, please come a few minutes early to peruse your scholar's portfolio before entering the suite. They can bring it in with them, but then it's down to business as we discuss grades and I hand you report cards and NWEA scores.
Thank you for being punctual so that I can be home before 10:00 each evening.

Sunshine on our Shoulders!
We had a beautifully sunny day today to go outside and learn about our solar cells. We watched a video describing how a solar cell is built, as your scholar how they work! We then built some solar toys to experiment with the sunlight. A great way to sum up solar!
Making Beautiful Music!
Scholars are rounding out their sound and energy units in science with the production of instruments. Their projects illustrated the terminology of pitch, percussion, volume, compression, an decibels. They were quite creative making some instruments that were a combination of string and percussion. See our photo below:
Yesterday scholars presented their Number the Stars projects. We heard letters to Ellen Rosen from her friend Anamarie, we saw beautiful scrapbooks and some very creative comic strips of important chapters in the book. The scholars executed these projects quite creatively. We will be moving into Homer's The Odyssey this week.
Today scholars will have a geography quiz and begin reviewing the first three chapters of math that we have completed so they can take the benchmark assessment on Monday of next week.
Have a great week!

Preparing for a Break!
After such a busy past couple weeks all of us are looking forward to a break after tomorrow. Scholars will have a math test on chapter three tomorrow and head home for the four days to refresh!
While they are on break they will need to be working on their Number the Stars projects. We will be handing those in on Monday for grading. We will then begin our journey with Odysseus as we venture into reading Homer.
We will then have five weeks of hard work before the Thanksgiving break. The second week back we will be rounding out the grades for the quarter.
If you have not yet signed up for a parent/scholar/teacher conference, I ask that you please do so. I like to meet with every family to hand out report cards for the first quarter.
Scholars enjoyed a great field trip to Weber State University last week exploring music and sound. We will have more surprises relating to that field trip soon.
Today scholars will play their "homemade" instruments for class and we will compare them to what we heard at Weber.
Have a lovely day!

We are very proud of our scholars and look forward to their growth over the year and the Spring Tournament in April. Scholars are no longer REQUIRED to participate. Last night's event met the standard for Utah's Sixth Grade English Speech requirement. Scholars are invited though, to attend Wednesday afternoon's for the competitive team from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. We will be traveling to other tournaments (high school) for our scholars to pick up mandatory skills, and we will be preparing for our April Tournament, which for many will determine eligibility for Nationals in Overland Park, Kansas in June. :)
A special thank you to all the parents who volunteered and help run the tournament....YOU ROCK!!!!!
Scholars have final essays due tomorrow as well as spelling and vocabulary tests tomorrow.
ALSO, Math Team invitations will go out this weekend. Please respond immediately if your student qualified so that we can determine our final team! Thank you for being patient with us as we move through this process. The beginning of the year is extremely busy and we are doing our best to stay on top of it all!
Next Monday scholars have a Latin test. They should be studying nightly!

Tonight is the NIGHT! Grandiloquent Guardians will SHINE!
Tonight is the first forensics tournament for our new GFA scholars. This tournament is mandatory and students will be graded in Language Arts for their work. Students are to be at the school by 5:30, dressed in their best dress. They may stay after school if they bring their clothes with them and hang them in the back of the room.
Concessions will be available for students, pizza, snacks, and drinks. Please be sure your scholar has some cash for dinner and snacks if they are staying. They may also pack a separate lunch for tonight.
Grandiloquent Guardians Forensic Team book bags will also be available for purchase for $10 this evening along with Applebee's cards ($2 and $5) for our fundraiser for nationals.
Grandiloquent Guardians Forensics Team shirts are on order and will be available for every scholar to purchase once they have arrived. They are dress code approved and they can add them to their school clothing repertoire.
The holding room will be the cafeteria. If you are looking to pick up your scholar (8:00 - 8:30) then please head to the cafeteria where the final awards will be handed out and students will be gathered.
Parents are welcome at the tournament if you want to sit with your students in the cafeteria between rounds. No one will be allowed in the rounds unless they are judging.

The Potential to be Kinetic!
Today's highlight was definitely experimenting with potential and kinetic energy. The scholars observed while we took sodium bicarbonate and mixed it with ascorbic acid to produce kinetic energy from potential energy. The highest result was about 30 feet in the air.
Scholars also took the chapter two math test today and performed quite well. We will begin chapter three on Monday.
Tomorrow scholars have a spelling and vocabulary test. They will also continue working on paragraphs in class so that we can move into essay writing next week.
Scholars have a list of materials that they can begin collecting at home. Those materials need to come to school on October 7th so that the scholars can design and build musical instruments as a class. Please keep the list somewhere where family members can see it and add to a bag any items they find. This is always an enjoyable activity for scholars. They will be discussing pitch, volume, and resonance that day. Mrs. Cardinal will be subbing.

On to the Last Week in September!
Time is flying by and scholars are busy getting ready for our first Forensics Tournament to be held October 9th. Be looking for an email from Mrs. Baker in reference to how you can help! Thank you for making these experiences so rich for your scholars!
We will be having a science test next week on Tuesday and our Hero Projects are due on Tuesday. We will be starting those project presentations first thing in the morning. If you would like to come and watch your scholar, please communicate with me and I will have him or her ready to go when you can be here. I am looking forward to hearing about our many heroes!
Wednesday (25th) is photo day! Students are to be in their regular dress code, but if hair cuts are in order, or a pretty hair bow, know that these are the photos that will be used for the yearbook.
Enjoy a restful weekend!

Put a Little Light on the Subject!
The last couple days have been crazy busy in the suite. There are some announcements that we need to highlight even though students are aware of them:
The science test scheduled for Thursday will move to next Tuesday. We have a bit more to finish with light and I want to review heat before the test.
The October Field Trip has been moved to October 10th, a Thursday. I will send more information as soon as I have details. We will need drivers. It will be a couple hours in the afternoon in Ogden. The suspense is building....
The October Forensics Tournament has been moved to October 9th, a Wednesday. We originally had it on the schedule for the 16th, right before UEA days, but that won't work for other schools, so we are moving it a week earlier. Please take note as all scholars need to be present at this first tournament. The tournament will start at 6:00 sharp, scholars are welcome to stay at school to prepare for the tournament after school. There will be concessions available. We hope to be finished by 9:00 p.m.
The first photos you will see tonight are from the first debate class where we ran a student congress. Students debated the a bill concerning banning plastic recyclable water bottles. Speeches were well defined and questioning was rapid. Scholars are getting the hang of argumentation and how to present their points.
The second set of photos are from science lab outside where we broke up white light into it's elements, ROYGBIV and students recorded what they saw. The next photos are from when we went inside and discovered the difference between color and light. We took red, blue, and green markers and colored one on top of the other on the board to create a brownish gray color. We then hypothesized what would happen if we took the same colors of LIGHT and mixed them. Most thought it would end up brown or gray.
We performed the experiment for the students to discover white light, which led the discussion on photons, what they are, and how they produce energy that we call light. Scholars will take a test on heat and light next week.
